The H
oly Family consists of the Child Jesus, the Virgin Mary and Saint Joseph. The subject became popular in art from the 1490s on,[1] but veneration of the Holy Family was formally begun in the 17th century by Saint François de Laval, the first bishop of New France, who founded a confraternity.
The Feast of the Holy Family is a liturgical celebration in the Catholic Church, as well as in many Lutheran and Anglican churches, in honour of Jesus, His mother, and his legal father, Saint Joseph, as a family;[2] it has been observed since 1921 when it was inserted by Pope Benedict XV.[3] The primary purpose of this feast is to present the Holy Family as a model for Christian families.[4] There are many churches dedicated to the Holy Family.

HUMANITY CAUGHT BETWEEN THE DEVIL AND THE DEEP BLUE SEA

How you have fallen from heaven, bright morning star,

felled to the earth, sprawling helpless across the nations!

You thought in your own mind,

I will scale the heavens; I will set my throne high above the stars of God,

I will sit on the mountain where the gods meet

in the far recesses of the north.

I will rise high above the cloud-banks

and make myself like the Most High.

Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the abyss.

Those who see you will stare at you, they will look at you and ponder. . .

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

Robert K.G.Temple 1976

Page 82

The Sacred Fifty

"We must return to the treatise 'The Virgin of the World'. This treatise is quite explicit in saying that Isis and Osiris were sent to help the Earth by giving primitive mankind the arts of civilization:
And Horus thereon said:

'How was it, mother, then, that Earth received God's Efflux?' And Isis said:

'I may not tell the story of (this) birth; for it is not permitted to describe the origin of thy descent, O Horus (son) of mighty power, lest afterwards the way-of-birth of the immortal gods should be known unto men - except so far that God the Monarch, the universal Orderer and Architect, sent for a little while thy mighty sire Osiris, and the mightiest goddess Isis, that they might help the world, for all things needed them.
'Tis they who filled life full of life. 'Tis they who caused the savagery of mutual slaughtering of men to cease. 'Tis they who hallowed precincts to the Gods their ancestors and spots for holy rites. 'Tis they who gave to men laws, food and shelter.'

THE SIRIUS MYSTERY

Robert K.G.Temple 1976

Page 74

"Mead quotes an Egyptian magic papyrus, this being an uncontested Egyptian document which he compares to a passage in the Trismegistic literature: 'I invoke thee, Lady Isis, with whom the Good Daimon doth unite, He who is Lord in the perfect black. '37
We know that Isis is identified with Sirius A, and here we may have a / Page 74 / description of her star-companion 'who is Lord in the perfect black', namely the invisible companion with whom she is united, Sirius B.
Mead, of course, had no inkling of the Sirius question. But he cited this magic papyrus in order to shed comparative light on some extraordinary passages in a Trismegistic treatise he translated which has the title 'The Virgin of the World'. In his comments on the magic papyrus Mead says: 'It is natural to make the Agathodaimon ("the Good Daimon") of the Papyrus refer to Osiris; for indeed it is one of his most frequent designations. Moreover, it is precisely Osiris who is pre-eminently connected with the so-called "underworld", the unseen world, the "mysterious dark". He is lord there. . . and indeed one of the ancient mystery-sayings was precisely, "Osiris is a dark God." ,
'The Virgin of the World' is an extraordinary Trismegistic treatise in the form of a dialogue between the hierophant (high priest) as spokesman for Isis and the neophyte who represents Horus. Thus the priest instructing the initiate is portrayed as Isis instructing her son Horus.
The treatise begins by claiming it is 'her holiest discourse' which 'so speaking Isis doth pour forth'. There is, throughout, a strong emphasis on the hierarchical principle of lower and higher beings in the universe - that earthly mortals are presided over at intervals by other, higher, beings who interfere in Earth's affairs when things here become hopeless, etc. Isis says in the treatise: 'It needs must, therefore, be the less should give place to the greater mysteries.' What she is to disclose to Horus is a great mystery. Mead describes it as the mystery practised by the arch-hierophant. It was the degree (here 'degree' is in the sense of 'degree' in the Masonic 'mysteries', which are hopelessly garbled and watered-down versions of genuine mysteries of earlier times) 'called the "Dark Mystery" or "Black Rite". It was a rite performed only for those who were judged worthy of it after long probation in lower degrees, something of a far more sacred character, apparently, than the instruction in the mysteries enacted in the light.'
Mead adds: 'I would suggest, therefore, that we have here a reference to the most esoteric institution of the Isiac tradition. . .', Isiac meaning of course 'Isis-tradition', and not to be confused with the Book of Isaiah in the Bible (so that perhaps it is best for us not to use the word-form 'Isiac').
It is in attempting to explain the mysterious 'Black Rite' of Isis at the highest degree of the Egyptian mysteries that Mead cited the magic papyrus which I have already quoted. He explains the 'Black Rite' as being connected with Osiris being a 'dark god' who is 'Lord of the perfect black' which is 'the unseen world, the mysterious black'.
This treatise 'The Virgin of the World' describes a personage called Hermes who seems to represent a race of beings who taught earthly mankind the arts of civilization after which: 'And thus, with charge unto his kinsmen of the Gods to keep sure watch, he mounted to the Stars'.
According to this treatise mankind have been a troublesome lot requiring scrutiny and, at rare intervals of crisis, intervention.
After Hermes left Earth to return to the stars there was or were in Egypt someone or some people designated as 'Tat' (Thoth) who were initiates into the celestial mysteries."

Page 77

"Bearing these books in mind (and I am sure they are there waiting underground like a time bomb for us), it is interesting to read this passage in 'The Virgin of the World' following shortly upon that previously quoted:
The sacred symbols of the cosmic elements were hid away hard by the secrets of Osiris. Hermes, ere he returned to Heaven, invoked a spell on them, and spake these words: . . . 'O holy books, who have been made by my immortal hands, by incorruption's magic spells. . . (at this point there is a lacuna as the text is hopeless) . . . free from decay throughout eternity remain and incorrupt from time! Become unseeable, unfindable, for every one whose foot shall tread the plains of this land, until old Heaven doth bring forth meet instruments for you, whom the Creator shall call souls.'
Thus spake he; and, laying spells on them by means of his own works, he shut them safe away in their own zones. And long enough the time has been since they were hid away.
In the treatise the highest objective of ignorant men searching for the truth
is described as: '(Men) will seek out. . . the inner nature of the holy spaces which no foot may tread, and will chase after them into the height, desiring to observe the nature of the motion of the Heaven.
'These are as yet moderate things. For nothing more remains than Earth's remotest realms; nay, in their daring they will track out Night, the farthest Night of all.'..."

Page 82

"We must note Stecchini's remarks about Delphi as follows :38
The god of Delphi, Apollo, whose name means 'the stone', was identified with an object, the omphalos, 'navel', which has been found. It consisted of an ovoidal stone. . . . The omphalos of Delphi was similar to the object which represented the god Amon in Thebes, the 'navel' of Egypt. In 1966 I presented to the annual meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America a paper in which I maintained that historical accounts, myths, and legends, and some monuments of Delphi, indicate that the oracle was established there by the Pharaohs of the Ethiopian Dynasty.

“Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life” | National Museum of American ...

“Ah! Sweet Mystery of Life.” Rida Johnson Young wrote the lyrics of the song and Victor Herbert composed the music. The song came from Hebert’s operetta Naughty Marietta, one of his greatest successes. Sheet music published in 1910

For the further attention of the Chief Executive Officer of Privilege Insurance.
It is now almost 2 months since your client Richard Dring 12 Sandal Cliff Sandal Wakefield Wf26au Car Reg E5 RMD was involved in an incident that resulted in an  accident leading to severe damage to my garden fence and double gates on the 3rd of October 2022.
PLEASE SEE BELOW THE RELEVANT INFORMATION CONTAINED IN MY PREVIOUS EMAIL..DATED Wed, 9 Nov, 09:39.

As requested by your company, the claims department, I submitted 2 estimates to repair the damage, which presently affords open access to the street.
I subsequently received a  letter from bvs Solutions informing me that they had been appointed by DLG to assess your claim

I received a call from their appointee Richard  Bland regarding an inspection of the damage incurred to my property. This was carried out on the 11th of November at around 11:0 pm. A few days later I was informed by Mr Bland that he had submitted his report, and had recommended the claim estimate be honoured and the amount necessary to effect the repairs  be paid directly to me.
Not having heard from your company, I first contacted bvs solutions on the 22nd of November 2202 speaking to someone called Alison at 4:30 pm. This lady informed me that Mr Bland's report had already been sent to the Privilege Insurance Claim. I rang  the Insurance claims department and spoke to a gentleman who, having first denied the report had arrived, re-checked procedures and confirmed the report had arrived and he would deal with the matter with urgency to resolve the issue. As yet nothing from your staff whatsoever.

I am writing to you personally as Chief Executive Officer of the  Privilege Insurance company, in the hope that after coming up to 2 months of seeking restitution for the damage caused by your client Richard Dring you will bring this problem to a successful conclusion.
As I have mentioned previously I am an 83 years old pensioner and can do without the aggravation of this desultory process to address your responsibilities.
Yours sincerely
David Denison

On Monday the 3rd of October, after a visit to Wakefield I returned to my home at 9 Windsor Road Wakefield. around 2;20 pm..
At around 3:30 pm I received a phone call from a neighbour asking me if I had seen my roadside garden fence, which the neighbour concerned said had been extensively damaged. Not having done so, I went out to check. It became obvious to me that a heavy vehicle had rammed a pair of double gates and had extensively damaged the wooden fence. On inspection I found what appeared to be a part of a rear, red, perspex type light. Closer within the garden area which had been penetrated by the vehicle concerned was what appeared to be a broken rear view window with heat wires plainly visible. The force with which the vehicle had gone across the path and broken through the gate was very considerable.

Later that night I noticed a small card had been posted through my letter box. It read as follows "Please call me 07896166455 my car has caused damage to your fence my apologies Richard" The following morning I rang the number and spoke to the gentleman concerned.. He asked for my details, house number and name and assured me he would contact his insurance company and organise the repair of my fence and double gate.

On Wednesday the fourth of October I again rang Richard, no answer so I left a message, and shortly after he rang back. said he had been in touch with his insurance company, and if I had heard nothing in two days to ring him back he would go back to the company for immediate action. I asked him for his full name and the name of his insurance company. He withheld his name and said I could reach him on 07896166455.
Questioned about the accident , he said he had parked his Land Rover on Windsor Road Wrenthorpe, facing upwards, had applied the hand brake left the car and before he knew it the vehicle gathering speed just missed a car and careered into my gate with such force it did the damage as shown in the photographs I took later, the broken windscreen and other debris scattered inside the garden itself. I asked if anyone had been hurt and said no.
I rang the number given to me today at 3:41 pm with no answer. Then lo and behold the man of the moment rang back, after a short conversation he promised to contact his insurance in the morning, and also would send me his personal details including insurance.

On the 7th of November, on the road leading up to my house I observed a delivery man visiting certain houses. I approached him and asked his name. Lo and behold it was  RICHARD DRING the perpetrator of the damage to my fence and gates. I asked him for an update to my garden fence repairs. He said he had reported the incident to his insurance company the Privilege Claims Team and they would be dealing with this matter.
He promised faithfully to ring your company today and clarify the repair situation. AND TO TEXT ME AN UPDATE THE FOLLOWING DAY. RICHARD DRING, IN SPITE OF HIS PROMISE HAS NOT AS YET CONTACTED ME.

Having asked him about his previous accident wherein his van rammed my garden gate and fence he repeated his story that he had parked his car on Windsor Road Wrenthorpe Wakefield where I live, and had left his vehicle on the sloping road, he applied the hand brake, which according to him slipped, he was out of the vehicle at the time. which begs the question.
This  road is a busy thoroughfare of children coming and going, and of locals walking their dogs, toing and froing their various purposes. The point being made here was the very real possibility of a very seriou perhaps fatal accident that could have happened. I had previously asked about injuries and was assured no one was hurt.
After a short conversation, Mr Dring said he was in a great hurry, and continued up the road in a modern vehicle to continue his drop offs.
I might add that Mr Dring told me that there was little point emailing your company as they do not reply. Advising a phone call as the best option

MESSAGE SENT TO RICHARD DRING
Tue, 8 Nov, 20:34 (11 hours ago)
Good morning, Richard,
It is now nigh on a month since your accident on Windsor Road, Wrenthorpe leading to considerable damage to part of my garden fencing and double gates.
Using the details, you gave; I have had occasion to contact Privilege insurance 4 times on this matter. A different member of staff answered each time. I was asked to submit 2 different quotes for the necessary repair work. This I have done.
Please will you follow up this momentum, that a worrying time for me can be satisfactorily resolved. You admitted honestly, responsibility for the damage, and in all fairness surely it is you that should ensure bringing this matter to a reasonable end
As I have said I am an 83-year-old pensioner with heart problems. The worry generated by this incident is doing me no good at all.
Please sort this matter out and effect repairs to the damaged area.
Yours sincerely

SURA 18 - THE CAVE
MECCA - 110 VERSES

In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful

"Praise be to God, who hath sent down the Book to his servant, and hath not made it tortuous1
But direct; that it may warn of a grievous woe from him, and announce to the faithful who do the things that are right, that a goodly reward, wherein they shall abide for ever, awaiteth them;
And that it may warn those who say, 'God hath begotten a  Son.'
No knowledge of this have either they or their fathers! A grievous saying to come out of their mouths! They speak no other than a lie!
And haply, if they believe not in this new revelation, thou wilt slay thyself, on their very footsteps, out of vexation.
Verily, we have made all that is on earth as its adornment, that we might make trial who among mankind would excel in works:
But we are surely about to reduce all that is thereon to dust! Hast thou reflected that the Inmates of THE CAVE and of Al
Rakim
2 were one of our wondrous signs?
When the youths betook them to the cave they said, 'O our Lord! grant us mercy from before thee, and order for us our affair aright.'
10 Then struck we upon their ears with deafness in the cave for many a year:
Then we awaked them that we might know which of the two parties could best reckon the space of their abiding.
We will relate to thee their tale with truth. They were youths who had believed in their Lord, and in guidance had we increased them;
And we had made them stout of heart, when they stood up and said, 'Our Lord is Lord of the Heavens and of the Earth: we will call on no other God than him; for in that case we had said a thing outrageous.
These our people have taken other gods beside Him, though / Page 190 / they bring no clear proof for them; but, who more iniquitous than he who forgeth a lie of God?
So when ye shall have separated you from them and from that which they worship beside God, then betake you to the cave: Your Lord will unfold his mercy to you, and will order your affairs for you for the best.'
And thou mightest have seen the sun when it arose, pass on the right of their cave, and when it set, leave them on the left, while they were in its spacious chamber. This is one of the signs of God. Guided indeed is he whom God guideth; but for him whom He misleadeth, thou shalt by no means find a patron, director.
And thou wouldst have deemed them awake
,3 though they were sleeping: and we turned them to the right and to the left. And in the entry lay their dog with paws outstretched.4 Hadst thou come suddenly upon them, thou wouldst surely have turned thy back on them in flight, and have been filled with fear at them.
So we awaked them that they might question one another. Said one of them, 'How long have ye tarried here?' They said, 'We have tarried a day or part of a day.' They said, 'Your Lord knoweth best how long ye have tarried: Send now one of you with this your coin into the city, and let his mark who therein hath purest food, and from him let him bring you a supply: and let him be courteous, and not discover you to anyone.

For they, if they find you out, will stone you or turn you back to their faith, and in that case it will fare ill with you for ever.'
20 And thus made we their adventure known to their fellow citizens, that they might learn that the promise of God is true, and that as to 'the Hour' there is no doubt of its coming
. When they disputed among themselves concerning what had befallen them, some said, 'Build a building over them; their Lord knoweth best about them.' Those who prevailed in the matter said, 'A place of worship will we surely raise over them.'
Some say, 'They were three; their dog the fourth:' others say, 'Five; their dog the sixth,' guessing at the secret: others say, 'Seven; and their dog the eighth.' SAY: My Lord best knoweth the number: none, save a few, shall know them.
Therefore be clear in thy discussions about them,5 and ask not any Christian concerning them.
Say not thou of a thing, 'I will surely do it to-morrow;' / Page 191 /
without, 'If God will.,6 And when thou hast forgotten, call thy Lord to mind; and say, 'Haply my Lord will guide me, that I may come near to the truth of this story with correctness.'
And they tarried in their cave 300 years, and 9 years over.7"

THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN

Thomas Mann

1875 1955

MOUNTING MISGIVINGS

Page 147 Quoted in full

"other he mentally summoned up various people, the thought of whom might serve him as some sort of mental support.
There was the good, the upright Joachim, firm as a rock-yet whose eyes in these past months had come to hold such a tragic Shadow, and who had never used to shrug his shoulders, as he did so often now. Joachim, with the "Blue Peter" in his pocket, as Frau Stohr called the receptacle. When Hans Castorp thought of her hard, crabbed face it made him shiver. Yes, there was Joa-chim - who kept constandy at Hofrat Behrens to let him get away and go down to the longed-for service in the " plain "- the " flat-land," as the healthy, normal world was called up here, with a faint yet perceptible nuance of contempt. Joachim served the cure single-mindedly, to the end that he might arrive sooner at his goal and save some of the time which "those up here " so wantonly flung away; served it unquestioningly for the sake of speedy re-covery - but also, Hans Castorp detected, for the sake of the cure'
itself, which, after all, was a service, like another; and was not duty duty, wherever performed? Joachim invatiably went upstairs after only a quarter-hour in the drawing-rooms; and this military precision of his was a crop to the civilian laxity of his cousin, who would otherwise be likely to loiter unprofitably below, with his eye on the company in the small salon. But Hans Castorp was con-vinced there was another and private reason why Joachim with-drew so early; he had known it since the time he saw his cousin's face take on the mottleled pallor, and his mouth assume the pathetic twist. He perfectly understood. For Marusja was almost always there in the evening -laughter-loving Marusja, with the little ruby on her charming hand, the handkerchief with the orange scent, and the swelling bosom, tainted within - Hans Castorp com-prehended that it. was her presence which drove Joachim away, precisely because it so strongly, so fearfully drew him toward her.
Was Joachim too "immured " - and even worse off than him-self, in that, he had five times a day to sit at the same table with Marusja and her orange-scented handkerchief? However that might be, it was clear that Joachim was preoccupied with his own troubles; the thought of him could afford his cousin no mental support. That he took refuge in daily flight was a credit to him; but that he had to flee was anything but reassuring to Hans Ca-storp, who even began to feel that Joachim's good example of faithful service of the cure and the initiation which he owed to his cousin's experience might have also their bad side.
Hans Castorp had not been up here three weeks. But it seemed longer; and the daily routine which Joachim so piously observed"

VENUS MAKES A PASS

THE TRANSIT OF VENUS ACROSS THE SUN

Page 26 / 27

"IF YOU'RE reading this before noon, there is a show that is out of this world happening over your head.Venus is passing in front of the face of

THE SUN.

A miracle of nature is causing the famous twinkling evening star to become briefly visible in broad daylight. Nothing like this has happened since 1882 - which means not a single living soul has ever witnessed it.
If you'd like to be part of history, all you have to do is to grab two bits of card and make the simple pinhole projector on the far right.
Do not, repeat not, look directly at the sun.
Don't kid yourself that you will be safe as long as you are wearing sunglasses, either. If you're foolish enough to watch through cheap tinted specs, or stupid and rich enough to use Dolce & Gabbanas - you'll go blind just the same.
After all, this is an event that will affect rich and poor alike. Yet the alignment symbolises the kind of love that'money can't buy. Deep, true, compassionate., dedicated, unconditional love.
Love is coming in waves towards the earth and, just as surely as it is going to cross economic boundaries, it is will ignore astrological distinctions. No matter your sign, you will experience an uplift in your spirits soon.

Your material circum-stances will also improve as a result of the love that you are willing to share, and the loving support from others you are humble enough to accept. You think this is a cold, harsh world?
It can be... but this transit means we're heading for a phase during which less selfish ideals predominate.
And it's going to last for the next eight years.
The next transit of Venus is on June 6, 2012, and many New Agers believe that the period between now and then marks a "gateway between worlds of positive possi-bility". The way they see it, every 121 years or so, the Earth gets a chance to become the brighter, happier place it has always had the potential to become. An eight-year "window" opens up, during which people become far more receptive to inspirational
ideas and grow less inclined to nurse old grudges and grievances. .
The Venus transits usually (though  not always) come in pairs, eight years apart, at the end of a 121-year cycle. Though those eight-year periods don't always coincide with peace, they do create a more mellow, forgiving climate.
The New Agers believe that the first Venus transit in the sequence (the one happening today) is the key turning in the lock, opening the door to a paradise future. The second brings the moment when people must decide whether to permanently welcome an era of higher consciousness or return to the old ways of war, greed, suspicion and hatred.
It is no coincidence, they say, that the Mayans - the pre-conquest inhabitants of what is now Southern Mexico and Guatemala - ended their astonishingly accurate calendar in 2012. It is, after all, based on the Venus cycle. According to those who still believe in the Mayan vision, 2012 will be when the Venus-god Quetzalcoatl returns to earth, to ask one last time whether its inhabitants are ready to create paradise. Or will they remain in the same hell of mutual hatred?
Of course, this is not the only interpreta-tion of the Venus transit.
Others, as you can see on this page, have their views of what it means. Most agree that it is about love-and some, too, reckon it is related to increased prosperity. But the majority, myself included choose to reserve judgment. First we need to observe the event. Then digest it. But on one point, at least, we are all already agreed. In so far as one event can ever be good news for the whole race, this is!"

SNAKE OF FIRE

Chapter xx

"THE LONG WAIT WAS WORTH IT. What lay in front of me in the depths of Punta del Este's Cueva # 1 was something quite special. The entrance is perhaps seven metres in width and three metres in height, and inside is a central chamber around twelve to fifteen metres deep. Positioned around its walls are a series of separate bays of different shapes and sizes, and a long corridor off to one side. It possessed roughly seven bays or com- partments, perhaps reflecting the septuple symbolism of Chico-moztoc, the Seven Caves.
The corridor, or chamber, on the right-hand side was around ten metres in length and of undoubted human manufacture. Johnny Rodriguez, the Cuban archaeologist, pointed out that here the skeletons of Guayabo Blanco women had been found. Each one, over 2,000 years old, was laid out in a foetal position and covered in red ochre.
From this knowledge alone, it seemed clear that the Guayabo Blanco venerated this cave site as a womb-like structure. If this was true, it made sense of why Chicomoztoc was seen as the place of emergence of the present human race.

The Transit of Venus

Strewn across the cavern's dusty floor were fragments of conch shell left behind by the last Taino to occupy, or use, the grotto. Overhead were two circular skylights, like the' zenith tubes' found at Olmec sites to mark the arrival of the sun at the time of the equinoxes. Beneath the one closest to the entrance was a circular concrete dais, where, according to Johnny, a stone plat- form would have been set in the ground. The rear skylight was difficult to approach, since it was now directly above a mound of earth displaced during excavations. Yet its apparent function was / Page 265 / interesting indeed. According to those scholars who had studied these skylights, it marked the 584-day cycle of the planet Venus. How this might have been achieved was not made clear.
Should the skylight really mark the transit of the planet Venus, then this was extremely important. Quetzalcoatl was seen as the Morning Star, while his twin, Xolotl, was viewed as the Evening Star, names given to the dual aspects of Venus.
Had we truly found the original site of the Seven Caves? Did this riddle, preserved by the Aztecs, relate in some way to the manner in which Cueva # 1 was able to catch the planetary influence of Venus, which, together with the seven stars of the Pleiades, deter-mined the 52-year calendar cycle marking the birthday of Quetzal-coatl? If this was correct, might there also be a connection between the seven-fold symbolism of the Seven Caves and the seven stars of the Pleiades? Remember, aside from being known as Ah-Canule, 'People of. the Serpent', those who established high culture in Mexico and the Yucatan were known as Ah-Tzai, 'People of the Rattlesnake'.
1
As a constellation, the rattlesnake was composed of a series of stars that emanated from the Pleiades which formed its seven-fold rattle. If we recall, too, that Quetzalcoatl's own serpentine body was that of the rattlesnake, and that the entire cult of the Chanes, or 'serpents', appears to have revolved around a species of rattlesnake known as the Crotalus durissus durissus,2 then this deadly snake begins to playa hitherto unknown role in the gradually unfolding story.

THE MYSTERY OF THE EMERALD TABLET

Page 31(chapter IV)
"AN atmosphere of romance and mystery surrounds the tradition of an emerald tablet or table that is said to have been discovered in the tomb of the legendary Hermes. It is first mentioned in Western literature in a treatise attributed to Albertus Magnus called De Mineralibus, written in the early part of the fourteenth century. In this manuscript it is stated that the tomb of Hermes was discovered by Alexander the Great in a cave near Hebron, and that in the tomb was found a tablet of emerald, taken from the hands of the dead Hermes by Sarah, the wife of Abraham. On this were inscribed in Phrenician characters the precepts of the Great Master concerning the art of making gold. The Hermes alluded to is doubtless intended to mean the traditionary Hermes Trismegistus mentioned in Chapter III.
There are many translations of the inscription supposed to have been found on the tablet, and these in varied Arabic and Latin forms have been carefully studied by Ruska.1 The earliest forms of the text are in Arabic, and the following is a translation from an Arab collection of commentaries of the early twelfth century known as

The Emerald Table of Hermes:

True it is, without falsehood, certain most true. That which is above is like to that which is below, and that which is below is like to that which is above, to accomplish the miracles of one thing. And as in all things whereby contemplation of one, so in all things arose from this one thing by a single act of adoption.
The father thereof is the Sun, the mother the Moon.
The wind carried it in its womb, the earth is the source thereof.
It is the father of all works of wonder throughout the world.
The power there of is perfect.
If it be cast on to earth, it will separate the element of earth from that of fire, the subtle from the gross.
With great sagacity it doth ascend gently from earth to heaven. Again it doth descend to earth and uniteth in itself the force from things superior and things inferior.
Thus thou wilt possess the brightness of the world, and all obscurity will fly far from thee.
This thing is the strong fortitude of all strength, for it over-cometh every subtle thing and doth penetrate every solid substance.
Thus was this world created.
Hence will there be marvellous adaptations achieved of which the manner is this.
For this reason I am called Hermes Trismegistus because I hold three parts of 'the wisdom of the whole world.
That which I had to say about the operation of Sol is completed."
